1.1. Applications of Robotics¶
Robots – The Journey Continues: This 10-minute video from the Springer Handbook of Robotics shows a compilation of robots performing a variety of tasks.
Transporting heavy things: A good example of this is the LS3 robot mule that the military is developing.
Humanoid robots In the introductory lecture of the Introduction to Robotics MOOC from Stanford, at about 7:30, is an overview of a number of interesting robotic features, especially Humanoid robots. Humanoid robots attempt to behave, and sometime appear, like a human.
Because so much of our world is made for humans, robots often need to have similar capabilities as human even when appearing like a human is not required. An example of this can be seen in the video that we will look at in class showing a recent DARPA Challenge competition where robots attempt various tasks useful for rescue efforts similar to what a fireman might perform.
Fully automated manufacturing plants, such as this Auto factory.
Unmanned aircraft, such as this automous plane, or this helicopter, which uses an sbRIO processor like our DaNI robots. Here is a sbRIO based quadcopter, with more explanations of how it was build and programmed using LabVIEW.
